Alluvial Ruby deposits in the Mogok Stone Tract.

Burma (Myanmar) is well known for natural genuine and high end Ruby Gemstones plus other precious stones either cut or polished often available via amazing deals if one has some ideas about gemstones among them are raw jadeite jade sapphire stones. Ruby is among the rarest of the major precious stones.

Ruby Trading.

Ruby are traded for at least two thousand years mainly in the far east the ruby trade was very diffuse to European eyes until the Portuguese reached Burma (Myanmar) around the 15th Century before all this went through India. The city of Pegu (today Bago)about 120 km east of Yangon) was a major market that was controlled by some local people who were licensed by the king who took his hefty cut.

Already at the time all corundum gems came from the Mogok stone tract where even today the main ruby source is. In 196x this was extended to Mong Hsu to the east near the Thai border but the red stones found there are no match for a good Mogok Ruby.

About ruby mining, the first step is always extracting the gemstones, three major types of ruby mining exist in Mogok, the pit method for excavating the valley alluvial, the open trench method for excavating hillside deposits and the extraction of gem-bearing material e.g. marble. Rain has transported the raw rubies down from the hills where they have settled in the bottom of the streams to form part of the alluvium. It is from this gravel that the majority of the stones are recovered. The rubies of Mogok occur in a crystalline limestone matrix while the sapphires are derived from pegmatites.

Sri Lanka also has some pretty stones but nothing is matching Burmese Ruby until today, that's the reason why they are exorbitant expensive compared to e.g. Madagascar sourced and other places.

About Madagascar's ruby sources and other countries in Africa followed but again the same picture cant match the quality of Myanmar Rubies from Mogok. Since the Burmese know that they restricted access to their mines and it is very difficult for foreigners to travel there and do some trading.

They make the excuse and tell they don't allow foreigners because of smuggling but this is just the usual lies and fairy tales of the orient because the real smugglers are the own peoples.

They bring the red gemstones to Thailand and they are sold in Bangkok and Chanthaburi. Many Thai say these are "Thailand Rubies" which is again nonsense (the call that white lies don't ask what are black lies since they lie almost all time I don't know why ).

The ruby cutting and polishing business is mainly in Bangkok and Chanthaburi but increasingly also in Ayutthaya Saraburi and elsewhere. It is very common that if anyone see that others make money with something a fierce competition will start and nobody thinks about tomorrow, that means what brings money let’s say for hundred people won’t bring almost nothing when thousand try to share the cake but the Thai nature is "hit & run"

But here the usual greed-minded mentality breaks through since local cutters cut for weight and not for quality so think twice when buying high-end gemstones. Unfortunately it goes like this with everything in Thailand it’s totally greed-driven and low-quality results from. The only exemption is sometimes the workmanship in temples and expensive buildings such as big hotels or so.

But it had some practical reasons when old and new colonialists (England & US) imposed the embargo and they traded everything through Bangkok and Chanthaburi the latter is south of Pattaya and has a substantial 'Ruby Trade" which is on open air in one old town street along the river and the shops around plus the stores in the hotels. The whole town is living from the gemstone businesses.

Gemstones always played an important part in trade of Myanmar (Burma) with Thailand mainly for wholesale, here is a slice of history. What happen over hundred of years with jade, sapphire, diamonds plus agate, amber, corals, amethyst, aquamarine, garnet, moonstone, tourmaline, jade, pearls, diamond and other.

All are found and mined in various forms either extracted from the earth or collected from river beds, all this are precious gems. As rough stones most are not attractive at all but after cut, faceted and polished great things and value might appear.

Ruby History.

Interested in ruby history? Before the 19th. century almost any red stone was considered to be a ruby, so it is likely that the larger stones were actually red spinels. Nevertheless, a short description is in order.

One stone was described as a ruby that belonged to the King of Persia. It was of the thickness and shape of an egg and drilled in the manner of many gems of the day. Another was bought by Ja'far Khan and presented to the Great Mogul Aurangzeb.

An old Indian who had once been the King's jeweler stated that the stone was not a balas ruby and that it was worth no more than 500 rupees. Aurangzeb eventually did what few buyers are able to do today, he returned the stone for a full refund. Also included was one red stone which belonged to the King of Bijapur. Its weight was 17.5 carats it was cut as a hollow cabochon and it was clean and of top quality. Another stone was one ruby which a Banian merchant weighed 50.75 carats and was of the second quality. This stone was also a hollow cabochon, a common cutting style of the day. There also were large topaz (probably a Sri Lankan yellow sapphire) of the Great Mogul, this stone weighed 157.25 carats and was highly prized by Aurangzeb.

The two most important rubies ever known in Europe were both brought there during the year 1875. One, a rich red cushion shape, weighed 37 carats, and the other was a blunt drop-shaped piece of 47 carats. Both stones were re-cut by J. N. Forster of London; the 37 carat piece yielded 32.3 carats and the 47 carat piece 38.5 carats. The smaller stone eventually fetched £10.000 and the larger £20.000. A source from that time told that experts pronounced them to be unrivaled for rubies of such large size. Perhaps even more authoritative proof of their quality was given by the fact that their sale in Burma created intense excitement.

The Burmese king was only persuaded to let the stones leave the country because he desperately needed the cash their sale brought. A military guard was considered necessary to escort the persons taking the stones to the ship. Regardless of the king's financial position, we can be quite sure that he would not part with the very best of his collection, for, as with many monarchs, such a collection has value far beyond money. In many cases the royal regalia and associated stones form a most important part of their rule the foundation of the kings status as it were.

Ruby Sale.

Perhaps even more authoritative proof of their quality was given by the fact that their sale in Burma created intense excitement. A military guard was considered necessary to escort the persons taking the stones to the ship. Regardless of the king's financial position, we can be quite sure that he would not part with the very best of his collection, for, as with many monarchs, such a collection has value far beyond money. In many cases the royal regalia and associated stones form a most important part of their rule, the foundation of kingly status as it were.

Without these trappings he would be truly left as an emperor without any clothes. Among the star rubies of renown, two large stones immediately come to mind: the 'de Long Star', an oval stone of over 100 carats, and the 'Rosser Reeves Star', an oval of 138.7 carats. The de Long Star Ruby is displayed in the American Museum of Natural History. But the strange thing is the Burmese Rubies prices are lower in Bangkok. In the course of globalization the gemstone trade increases in volume every years and Thailand is a destination where more and more buyer from south Asia come to shop for gems. Beside of buying raw materials for jewelry it also is a common way of safe-guarding wealth.

Inevitably jewelry production and dealing has a steady grow and is a profitable business in Thailand due to the low wages and good workforce but top quality is rather rare. Local people are not much performance-minded or rather they demand top-notch from other but are not deliver it most times. Although they try to sell high on the international market but pay low salary to local staff on top of it the education system in the country is one of the worst in Asia and politics try to keep people away from English language to make them less prone to international streams. That can’t work but since also the people including the current king (2021) who are on power have a low education they don’t understand. In the gem manufacturing there are advances in design and quality control in recent times. Also in the Thai capital the market is much bigger than in Myanmar.

In Myanmar the most interesting ruby bazaar is in Yangon is the Bogyoke Aung San Market right opposite the Sule Shangri-La Hotel.

Ruby are very rare precious stones.

Only a very few sources of natural rubies can produce facet qualities in any quantity. The Mogok Stone Tract in Upper Burma / Myanmar has traditionally been associated with the finest rubies but even good stones are extremely rare from this fabled area. `Pigeon's blood' was the term used to describe the finest Burmese stones.

Actually this phrase has little meaning today for so few people have seen the blood from this bird. Better, perhaps, is to compare the hue of the finest rubies with the red signal of a traffic light. It is a glowing red hue that is diffused throughout the stone as a result of the unique property of fine raw rubies a rich red fluorescence to daylight.

Why Thai Ruby come from Myanmar?

Why Myanmar Ruby (Burmese) stones are considered best? Again the reason is fluorescence e.g. to see it clear today fine rubies sold in Thailand are mostly from Myanmar / Burma the simple reason is Thailand has no quality gem they are imposters and liars all gemstones such as ruby sapphire and the whole corundum family pls spinel and similar are imported via the border trade from Myanmar why are almost all Thai Ruby imported from Myanmar? It's because ther is an embargo since WW2 imposed by the UK / USA thy dont allow . Although heat treatment of rubies which nowadays is performed on virtually all rubies from Thailand (mainly done by the ruby burner os does improve their appearance considerably, it does not make up for their lack of fluorescence, only those facets where light is totally internally reflected will be a rich red; the others appear blackish as with red garnets. In terms of body color, they have actually a purer red than most others.

However, the finest Burmese rubies appear red all over not only is a rich red seen in the areas where total internal reflection occurs, but because of the red fluorescence, the other facets are also red. This glowing red hue is what makes fine Myanmar rubies so special.

Natural Mogok Ruby.

The result is that the appearance of the Siamese ruby is inferior to that of Mogok and Mong Hsu. It tends to be purplish or even brownish and generally it is too dark. A Siamese red ruby inspected under natural or artificial light will show its hues only on those facets which are directly hit by the light. Those facets in the shade ('extinction') will appear almost black.

A Myanmar ruby will appear red throughout, even on those facets which are not directly exposed to the source of light. A typical complaint with regard to Thai stones is that they are often too purple in hue. In terms of hue position, Thai stones are actually less purple than rubies from Burma or Sri Lanka. The problem instead is one of a lack of intensity and/or the tone is being too dark. Reference to any of the major color atlases will show this to be easy. With regard to this the red stones from most other sources are similar to those from Burma in that the stones display a strong red fluorescence. The Thai material is the exception rather than the rule. Why then we may ask are fine rubies not more common.

Clarity of a High-Quality Ruby.

The answer is the clarity of a high-quality ruby since only a handful of sources produce gemstone material clean enough to facet. One of these sources is Sri Lanka next to Burma Sri Lanka produces the finest rubies although most tend to be too light in color. As these stones are often of a pink shade the term 'pink sapphire' is usually applied today.

Mogok Ruby Mines.

In Mogok ruby mines are many some underground mining where the red and blue stones have been growing on marble and the other version is in rivers or just in the earth by sifting through the gravel.

That's naturally the easy way but is sometimes very effective and made many people very rich overnight in places which are known of their alluvial deposits such as in Mogok which is about 120 km north of Mandalay.

Almost all excavating methods are applied such as:

  • Alluvial Ruby deposits.

  • Open trench method means at the hillside.

Extraction of the ruby gem-bearing mineral found inside the hills where rubies have been grown on white marble. This is an amazing picture imagine perfect white marble of a similar type as in Carrara and the blood-red gemstones on top of it. They dig a cylindrical hole into the earth with a diameter of less than a meter to make sure it won’t collapse when it becomes deeper.

Two of them dig and one is at the top of the hole to collect the earth lifted up in a small basket. This works down to about ten meters, if it needs further down they sink another shaft for ventilation and communication. When a promising layer of earth is reached horizontal passages are driven into the hill. Most mines are smaller ones worked by 3 men.

This works down to about ten meters, if it needs further down they sink another shaft for ventilation and communication. When a promising layer of earth is reached horizontal passages are driven into the hill. Most mines are smaller ones worked by 3 men.

Actually all this is a very inefficient method and so has been replaced at the larger mines by mechanization. Mechanized mining allows the processing, of much greater quantities of earth in a more systematic manner and has, by and large, replaced the simpler pit mining by bulldozers, backhoes other heavy equipment to move large quantities of earth.

The jungle around has been stripped of huge tracts of land in an effort to get at the gems below, creating an ecological disaster. Problems with deforestation cant even be get under control by the government to ban the use of all bulldozers and heavy equipment did nothing to stop the destruction.

The business gets on a larger scale because only bigger mine owners have the money to work into the hill. This is then scraped into a big hill, where water cannons gradually force it into a pump. The pump carries the soil to a jig m. As the mud passes over the jig, the heavier minerals are trapped while the lighter material is carried away. At the end of the day the pump is turned off and the ruby & sapphire gems are selected from the gravel. Small screened troughs are also used for washing the gem gravel, in conjunction with high-pressure water cannons.

One problem with the jigs is that sometimes the water current is too strong and takes away not only the mud but also the smaller gems. Perhaps a reduction in water pressure or the insertion of two or more jigs in line, one after the other, would allow the recovery of more stones, particularly in the smaller sizes. Even under the best of conditions the recovery of gems is small with a day's work at a typical ruby mine yielding but a tiny handful of gems of mostly inferior qualities and sizes. Witnessing the day's production at one ruby mine gives some understanding of just how rare a fine ruby really is.

Ruby Mines.

The ruby gemstones have been "objects of desire" for more than a thousand years. They became really valuable after some technological breakthroughs about 200 years ago made it possible to cut facets and polish them in the right way. Although the red stones are well known to have impurities, that's natural, if no impurities they are probably synthetic or underwent heavy heat treatment.

It should be kept in mind that the red stones are only a bit less hard than diamonds so it was just not possible to handle them in the past because there was no technology available to do that.

Selecting a Ruby Ring.

Selecting a ruby ring could just be the right piece of jewelry. The next step could be to enhance this pretty present by choosing the metal setting which is usually yellow or white gold or maybe silver won't hurt too. To stay with the red ruby stone several choices are possible should it be a high-end ruby ring? Flawless and no inclusions to choose a different way of ruby selection here is a break-point since a real attractive ruby has only minimal inclusions but the fewer inclusions a ruby has the higher the price and it can get astronomical figures. Some of the highest-priced rubies come from the Mogok ruby stone tract.

massive ruby gold rings

Massive ruby gold rings Myanmar style.

There is many high end ruby jewelry on the market especially in places such es the Bogyoke Aung San market in Yangon the probably best place to buy genuine rubies and not getting cheated. The gemstones on sale in the Myanmar precious stone bazaar are not cheap at all but hey are not manipulated and often without any value like in the re stones on sale in neighboring Thailand were most gems are manipulated from low quality into the high end value.

The closest to a Ruby is a Spinel.

Even the manufacturer of the current British crown jewels put a spinel in the crown instead of a ruby. The gemstones appear very similar I would even say that the color of the spinel looks better than rubies. However, in the days when the British colonial forces looted Burma no such distinction was made.

Spinel is a red saturated gems but not so popular . It is usually compared to sapphire or ruby rather than being recognized for its own intrinsic beauty and value. Actually when you encounter this beautiful red gem you probably see a synthetic spinel whereas genuine spinel are not often seen.

Spinel gemstones occurs with a in red orange hue (flame spinel), grayish blue, greenish blue, grayish green purple to violet color. It also occurs in yellow and in an opaque variety. When compared to the red of ruby the color it's usually considered less intense (although red spinel can en often look very much like a ruby with a more intense brilliance. Anyway these spinel colors for themselves are optically quite pleasing. The most popular are red (usually a more orange red than ruby red).

Spinel may be confused with or misrepresented as one of many gemstones such as ruby, garnet, as well as glass. The synthetic is often used to make composite stones such as doublets. Spinel is a fairly hard, fairly durable gemstone.
